History
During the first year in business, APX technicians installed about 1,000 alarms, reaching up to 20,000 customers in 2004 and 44,000 by 2005. The customer base grew by 825 percent between 2005 and 2010. Now there are over 550,000 of these systems installed across the United States and Canada.
In 2009, APX acquired a monitoring station from Criticom Monitoring Services, a subsidiary of Protection One. With this station, located in St. Paul, Minnesota, came an additional 83 employees. Later that year, APX opened its new corporate headquarters in Provo, Utah, which is an office as well as a monitoring center. A smart grid training facility opened in Austin, Texas in 2011, after the acquisition of Meter Solutions.
At the end of 2010, APX launched a rebranding effort to better represent its goals and capabilities. With this re-branding effort came the decision to change the company name to Vivint. A marriage of the Latin word "vive" (to live) plus the word intelligent, Vivint's name conveys its mission: to help customers live intelligently.
