- For carbon monoxide protection, position detectors near potential sources of CO, maintaining a distance of 5-20 feet from sources like water heaters, furnaces, and space heaters. Avoid placing them too close to prevent false alarms.
- Install detectors near your attached garage to monitor CO emissions from running vehicles, which can become hazardous in enclosed spaces.
- Position detectors approximately 6 inches above or below the wall, and if ceiling-mounted, ensure they're at least 6 inches away from the wall.
- Maintain a distance of 5 to 15 feet from fuel-burning appliances.
- Ensure nothing obstructs or covers the detectors.
- Avoid placing detectors near exterior doors and windows. Depending on your home's size, consider adding extra detectors beyond these minimum requirements for comprehensive safety.
